We’ve all received them before, the email auto response: “I am out of the office until __ please contact __ if you need assistance.” We plan well for those times when we’re out of the office as our responsible self rises to the occasion. There are times however, when an auto response catches the reader off guard. This particular response captured my attention.
“I am so thrilled to hear from you! I hope you are having a dynamite summer. Please excuse any delay in responding to you. I hope you can understand that I am spending a glorious summer with my adorable family and, to be truly present, I need to limit my usage of electronics.
If you need a more immediate response, feel free to call my cell. Or come on over!”
I paused for a moment and then reread it again..”to be truly present, I need to limit my usage of electronics. If you need a more immediate response, feel free to call my cell. Or come on over!”
This parent’s auto response sent a powerful message – my family is important, and for awhile I am putting aside my electronic devices so that I can be present to them. In a digital age when so many of us are “wired” to our electronic devices we need those gentle reminders of putting time aside to be present to our family and friends.
Thank you Sarah for your message, you gave me a lot of food for thought. I trust you enjoyed the summer with your adorable family. I didn’t get a chance to call your cell, I will stop over!
