The Angels among us – The Feast of the Guardian Angels

Angel of God,
My guardian dear
to whom God’s love commits me here.
Ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard
to rule and guide.
On this Feast of the Guardian Angels may this day increase our awareness of the many manifestations of God’s Love in our life.  God is revealed through our little ones as we are reminded in today’s Gospel reading, “Jesus called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you unless you…Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.” Matthew 18:1-5,10

Very carefully and deliberately the children place the bulbs in the soil.

Last Sunday’s SCORE opened other venues for exploring and discovering God among us. The extra time together allowed us to plant crocus bulbs throughout the courtyard. The action was a little community service project with a teachable moment for learning about the “little” sacraments which point us to God’s love.

HOW? We gathered around, and with the help of adults, the children carefully placed and spaced the bulbs in  the earth. We know in the weeks ahead the soil will grow cold, and the little bulbs will “hibernate” until the earth warms again in the Spring, The planting of the bulbs provided something very tangible for the children to see, and to touch, to begin to understand of how, like the little bulbs that will burst forth with color, in the spring. There is a little God-bulb within all of us that nurtured will grow and burst open with love and care.  The gift of God’s grace freely given to all of us at our Baptism, nurtured with the love and tenderness of parents, family, and friends

Take home:
as we continue to nurture our children: review with your child the handout, Session 3God is Our Father, God Cares for Us. Check out the Activity, and Ready for the Sacraments, and Family Prayer on p. 13. On this feast of the Guardian Angels spend time talking about the angels around us.
Let us Pray:

  • for our children, one another, our families and friends especially those who depend upon our prayers and support.
  • for our Planet, that we may be good stewards.
  • for peace in our communities, the families whose lives are broken through violence, especially for the families who lost loved ones in the shooting in Roseburg Oregon.

Angels of God, be at our sides today, enlighten our actions to give Glory to God!
