Breathe in us your Holy Spirit

It’s our fourth SCORE session, and the focus: The Holy Spirit’s guidance in our lives. Giving “breath” to the instruction of the Holy Spirit takes deliberate planning, and praying for inspiration. Truth be told, a theological treatise on the Holy Spirit is beyond comprehension for little children preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. The mantra: Keep it simple, concrete and to the point. Breathe in us your Holy Spirit…

Loyola Press’ Finding God Catechist Guide provided a thoughtful plan for the lesson. The instructions presented  a drop-down menu of choices to execute the lesson plan. Though the planning tools are provided, it’s the catechist who breathes life into the plan. I recall reading in the Catechist magazine, the Catechist is “one who echoes God’s Word.” Breathe in us your Holy Spirit….

God’s Word for this lesson spoke of Simeon of Jerusalem, an old man who served in the Temple and waited for the coming of the Savior. And the story is told of Mary and Joseph presenting the baby  Jesus in the Temple. And guided by the grace of the Holy Spirit Simeon recognizes that this little child is the Chosen One, the Savior. The story ignites the religious imagination, an old man, a young family fulfilling their obligation. And the children listened in earnest. Breathe in us your Holy Spirit…

The Spirit stirred within our classroom as we discussed how the Holy Spirit guides us as he guided Simeon.  These were the teachable moments giving children space to share their understanding  of the Holy Spirit.  Yes, the Spirit stirs within their little hearts helping them to grow in their faith. We are there to guide them,  to pray with them and to help them make connections of how the Spirit speaks to them in their classrooms, in the playground, on the soccer field, in their neighborhoods and at home.  Breathe in us Holy Spirit… Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth.
