Advent 2020 in the year of a pandemic

This evening marks the beginning of the Advent Season.  Set-up for Advent is predictable: unpack the pewter base and check the candle length. Today I plucked a few sprigs from the emerald green arborvitea behind my neighbor’s garage. Assembling the Advent wreath I ask myself how different will this season look and feel?

COVID19 informs how we enter this Advent time. The rituals will speak to waiting with hope and expectation.  It is in the very season of waiting that defines and shapes who we are becoming.   What do we wait for? Christ to be reborn in our hearts?   God’s Word to illumine our minds to break down the barriers and divisions in our country and our world?

This evening several of us will gather via zoom to light our Advent wreaths.  In our individual homes we will light one candle, and share how we hope to bring the light of Christ to others this Advent season.

Engraved around the base the Advent message grs my hope: The people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light, upon those who have lived in the land of gloom, a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing. May this wreath and its light be a sign of God’s promise of salvation.
